Until 31 December 2014, secondary school students in Australia could apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) through the Secondary Schools TFN Program. Application was made through the NAT 2024 form: Tax file number – application or enquiry for secondary school students, available in paper through schools and not distributed online. At the time, this was by far the most convenient way of applying for a TFN, and many Australians who were secondary school students during that time would have been granted their TFN under the programme.

For the sake of historical interest, I have recreated the old NAT 2024 form from some old scans sitting on my hard drive:
